Research abstract
1 out of 5 tracheal intubations are are Difficult Tracheal Intubations (DTIs), with trauma and death rates around 80%. 27% of combat wounds occur to the head, neck, and airway. In the combat setting, airway compromise is the second leading cause of preventable death after hemorrhage. Military Medicine is ill-prepared to provide prolonged prehospital combat casualty care on impending austere battlefields. Medical unit leaders are expressing concern that these distances from hospitals paired with a shortage of expert medics will increase pre-hospital death tolls. DAF is prioritizing multi-capable airmen in agile combat employment operations, and technologies that allow non-experts to act in roles they were not trained to perform. Spiro Robot will enable medics with less training to perform DTIs and save lives on the battlefield. Spiro Robotics will engage medical units with a high volume of combat casualty care cases like the 59th MDW and 711 HPW.
