Research abstract

Communication bottlenecks and limited on board computing and storage limit the effectiveness and timeliness of space capabilities today. These challenges will grow as the U.S expands its military, civil, and commercial space operations beyond GEO to xGEO and cislunar space. 10x-100x increased in distances will strain ground-based deep space communication resources, increase latency, and reduce effectiveness of space missions in this expanding domain.  The U.S. Space Force must be postured to maintain domain awareness and protect U.S. interests in an Area of Responsibility of unprecedented size. Future architectures will suffer unless computing resources are deployed to the edge in xGEO/cislunar space.  Nebula Compute will apply its in-space computing expertise and novel radiation shielding approach, designed for LEO orbits with Nebula ServerSats, to xGEO and cislunar space. This will enable the rapid deployment of COTS computing systems to the edge, delivering terrestrial-like computing capabilities and services to space, where traditional computing is generations behind terrestrial systems.
