Research abstract
This STTR project focuses on the development of a groundbreaking semi-solid electrolyte to advance lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery technology, aiming to address the Air Force's need for high-energy-density power sources with energy density over 400 Wh/kg. By leveraging the compatibility of our semi-solid electrolyte with current lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes, we ensure a seamless transition to scalable production without the additional risks associated with new production techniques. With a focus on enhancing the performance and reliability of unmanned aerial systems, particularly eVTOL and UAV platforms, the project aligns with the strategic goals of increasing mission endurance and reducing logistical constraints. In phase I, central to the project is the facilitation of strategic connections with key Air Force end-users and acquisition experts, enabling direct alignment with operational needs and procurement processes. Simultaneously, we will construct and test prototype cells to demonstrate the viability of semi-solid electrolyte solution. Collaboration with UDRI and AFRL, as well as leveraging established DoD relationships ensure our solution meets both the technical and strategic needs of the Air Force. The anticipated outcome is a commercially viable, advanced battery solution, setting a new benchmark for energy storage within defense applications.
