Research abstract

During the Phase I STTR, the MapLarge Team will conduct outreach for a new Digital Image To SysML (DI2S) software extension for Air Combat Command (ACC), USSTRATCOM and PEO Missiles and Space. The Problem: USAF and USA’s digital documentation overload – US military programs of record across the DoD involve many 20+ year-old programs. Modern software that provide SysML design include applications like MagicDraw, IBM Rhapsody, StarUML, PlantUML, etc.; these applications enable model-based systems engineering (MBSE). MBSE provides enhanced understanding for all stakeholders regarding the design and implementation of software applications, workflows, sequence diagram business diagrams, etc. The art of MBSE and the SysML specification has evolved rapidly in the last 20 years with SysML 1.0 adopted in 2007 and SysML 2.0 adopted in 2023. Flow-charts, use cases, scenario diagrams and the like have existed for decades, however much of that knowledge is locked in static images, charts, documents, etc. While modern SysML applications have the capability to ingest software code and generate SysML documentation or produce code from SysML specifications, the ability of SySML applications to ingest static digital images and create digital SysML documents according to SysML1.0/2.0 is non-existent. Organizations like ACC, USSTRATCOM, etc. have a need to take static PowerPoint/Word/PDF generated use cases, workflows, system diagrams, etc. and digitize that information in SySML specifications. New approaches are required to enhance this process outside of manual human translation. The Solution: The proposed STTR project team will design a new SysML software extension called Digital Images to SysML (DI2S) for ACC/USSTRATCOM/PEOMS and others, helping the software analytic workforce replace manual SysML digitization of outdated documents.
