Research abstract

Eye injuries from military operations have skyrocketed in the past decades as newer munitions create increasingly smaller debris that can embed and devastate the eye. An estimated 420 people were discharged from ocular trauma in Iraq and Afghanistan. In future high-intensity conflict far from hospitals, severe injury rates are expected to increase x20, resultingŚfor ocular trauma patientsŚin high-probability of long term visual loss and brain damage, and military discharge. In future austere operating environments, the DoD is considering sending ophthalmologists to the battlefield to mitigate ocular trauma outcomes, but one of the barriers is that current graft solutions for ocular trauma repair require freeze-drying or refrigeration. MatriNova will revolutionize soft tissue repair with a nanofiber membrane that has 99.9% bacterial reduction and doesnÆt need special storage conditions. Matregenix will engage with surgical medical units, such as 720th Special Tactics Group, who must be highly skilled in trauma repair and combat wound management.
