Research abstract

BEACON targets a pressing defense need for enhanced situational awareness (SA) in environments where preservation of survivability and lethality are paramount. By enabling Special Operations Forces (SOF) to receive discreet, hands-free, and eyes-out alerts, BEACON preserves their focus and readiness in hostile settings. The system integrates with ATAK/SWAK to provide real-time, mission-specific tactile and visual cues, configurable at the Operator level to ensure relevance, without the distractions of conventional EUD or screen devices. Phase I objectives focus on demonstrating BEACON's technical feasibility, establishing robust system requirements with stakeholder inputs, and securing formal support for Defense transition. Key efforts include highlighting BEACON's unique capabilities and addressing potential Defense end-user and customer stakeholder concerns through effective demonstrations of functional BEACON component prototypes. Feedback will refine system performance metrics, ensuring BEACON meets operational challenges and enhances capabilities as envisaged by end-users. The Go-To-Market (GTM) strategy leverages BEACON's dual-use potential, positioning it as an affordable, versatile wearable for both defense and civilian markets. By leveraging major online retailers and forging strategic alliances for customized alert functionalities with established consumer brands, BEACON aims to penetrate a broad customer base, ensuring its commercial success and relevance across diverse applications. Success in Phase I, evidenced by a comprehensive set of system requirements and endorsement of Customer Memorandum for future Defense transitions, will pave the way for Phase II RDT&E efforts and subsequent defense adoption. This foundational phase is crucial for aligning BEACON's development with the strategic priorities of stakeholders, demonstrating its value proposition and securing the support needed for its realization and deployment in enhancing the operational effectiveness of SOF personnel. ???????
