Research abstract

To meet growing electrical power needs for military radio sets, it is desired to produce a battery that has a capacity greater than 500 W-hr/kg delivering 12 volts and 16 amp-hours in a package weighing less than 0.84 pounds. It is necessary that this battery maintains greater than 70% of its nominal capacity after 300 full discharge cycles and occupy a space less than 15 in3 with a peak current capability of 8 amps. Additionally, the battery must overcome safety issues associated with lithium ion batteries enabling operations from -30 °C to 60 °C. To this need, SkyVision Sciences is developing a new solid state battery that eliminates flammability issues that plague conventional lithium ion batteries, offering exceptional performance over 663 W-hr/kg.
