Research abstract

To increase the energy capacity, reduce the weight, improve the cyclic lifetime, and shorten the recharging time for batteries for use in future handheld radio applications, we need advanced energy storage technologies that perform better than current Li-ion batteries. TDA proposes to develop batteries based on Lithium-ion/Sulfur (Li-S) battery chemistry. To increase the energy density, rate capabilities, and lifetime of the batteries, we will use TDA’s proprietary carbon/sulfur (C/S) composite for the cathode material. Our goal is to develop full cells based on Li-S chemistry to provide, at a minimum, specific energy of 500 Wh/Kg capable of recharge at a rate of up to 3C while maintaining the reliability and safety standards of today's Li-Ion batteries. In Phase II, we will scale up our materials to make pouch cells. We will develop facile processes that are scalable and inexpensive. Once the battery cycle performance is met, our subcontractors, ADA and Acculon Energy, will design and make the pouch cells, integrate them into a battery pack with a full battery management system, test them and deliver to the SOCOM at the end of the project. A final report and ten battery pack prototypes will be sent to SOCCOM for further testing and evaluation.
