Research abstract

In this project, Edgesource proposes to leverage our experience creating these successful, operational DoD and IC data processing and dissemination systems to research more efficient methods for detecting, tracking, and identifying UAS as well as fusing and storing the detection data and securely providing it in real-time to authorized DoD entities.áá We understand that any credible approach to providing affordable, scalable, subscription-based, real-time UAS tracking data requires incorporating commercial data from multiple vendors and dealing with the cybersecurity and operational threats inherent in commercial data.á Based on our experience and research, no single source of commercial UAS data will fully address the mission requirement, thereby necessitating a holistic approach to providing commercial UAS data. Our proposed project will involve the following milestones: The objective of this research effort is to design and develop an affordable and scalable commercial and subscription-based, real-time UAS tracking information system by studying the potential to adapt the underlying architecture of the DowdingÖ COP into a fully commercial, Dowding-based UAS tracking data fusion environment. á This effort builds on Edgesourceĺs existing, DoD-funded work to develop the WindtalkerÖ sensor and the DowdingÖ Common Operating Picture, to integrate them with DoD networks, and to achieve Authorization to Operate (ATO) within DoDĺs technology environment.á The underlying product from which this research will derive is thus already in compliance with applicable Federal and DoD standards, and the new capabilities will be designed to adopt as much of this heritage as possible to maintain compatibility and cybersecurity.ááá The key technologies to be investigated include:á Prototyping data ingest code to safely and securely handle untrusted data from commercial UAS sensor networks in real-timeá Adapting the Dowding architecture for real-time correlation and fusion of UAS tracking data from multiple commercial and government sourcesá Incorporating data-field-level security tagging into the API, storage, and display subsystems to enable compatibility with regulatory and policy requirements such as Section 130i.á The goals of our research effort include demonstrating prototype architecture and commercial scalability that reflects the technical challenges outline above as well as delivering research data on the viability of the Governmentĺs requested subscription-based business model.á
