Research abstract

The U.S. Army's push for modernization requires reliable and innovative tools to maintain an efficient operational chain. A pivotal aspect is monitoring the health and readiness of large battery packs in vital military equipment. This Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program aims to develop a new sensor to detect the onset of failure of battery modules in large battery packs used in various applications. These failures might arise from physical damage, uneven current distribution, heating, or latent manufacturing defects. Xilectric’s On-board Bad Battery Module Detection System (OBBDMS) is designed for straightforward integration, focusing on enhancing battery reliability and safety. Unlike conventional battery management systems, OBBDMS offers an added layer of protection using unique protocols and measurement techniques. Implementing this sensor will enhance battery safety, provide early warning of failing modules, and decrease operational costs. Moreover, by identifying and addressing battery issues earlier, the system streamlines Army logistics, ensuring timely replacements and minimized downtimes.
