Research abstract
GPS provides high accuracy positioning at low cost with unparalleled global ubiquity but is too easily EW contested by superpower and near peer adversaries.ááTherefore, GPS-contested navigation is a critical capability for the Air Force and DoD.ááMore flight systems are beginning to employ non-GPS navigation aiding to increase system robustness in current as well as anticipated future contested environments.ááMagnetic navigation has recently been proven by the Air Force to be an effective means of APNT, especially in aircraft that typically operate at altitudes sufficiently high enough to be unaffected by highly localized, ground-based anomalous magnetic interference sources that would otherwise contribute to significant localization errors.ááTo this end, a ruggedized and environmentally hardened low SWaP-C, high sensitivity, vector magnetometer that can survive the mission profile of flight systems, both manned and unmanned, as well as aerial weapons would be of tremendous value. The RM3100 is a high sensitivity, high dynamic range, and low SWaP-C tri-axial vector magnetometer witháa volume of approximately Ż cubic incháthat is ideally suited to providingámagnetic navigation aiding on manned, unmanned, and weapons systems.áIt has no limitation in altitude performance, an operating temperature range of -40░C to 85░C, a storage temperature range of -65░ C to 125░C, resolution and noise of less than 5nT, dynamic range of ▒200uT, and sampling rateáof up to 200Hz. áOver the pastá11 years, over 45 million units have been produced on a fully automated manufacturing line in the United States andáfieldedáin a wide variety of applications, including for the US and Allied militaries. áWithin theálast 10 years, the RM3100 has become the de facto standard for CubeSats and other low-cost space missions.ááBecause of its reputation in the space community, NASA and the European Space Agency have qualified the RM3100 and its ASIC, at their own expense, for the demands of deep space missions including the ability toásuccessfully operate and survive 300kRad radiation doses for half hour intervals. Ruggedization of the RM3100 would enable even more applications where shock and vibration are demanding. áRuggedization would consist of retooling the RM3100 housing and bobbin to be pot-able and upgrading the automated manufacturing line toápotáthe sensor coils in production, which includes potting compound dispensing,ávision system inspection of application uniformity and in-line curing. áAdditional required work includesáqualification testing of survivability across all anticipated shock,ávibration, temperature and humidity profiles consistent with mission requirements.
