Research abstract

All Space Vehicles require attitude feedback and magnetometers are key to providing it.  The proposed Space Magnetometer leverages PNI Sensor’s COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) RM3100 magnetometer.  The RM3100 is low SWaP-C and produced at scale by PNI at its headquarters in Santa Rosa, California.  Unlike other commercially available magnetic sensors, the RM3100 magnetometer, which is based on a magneto-inductive sensing technology, has over 23 times greater resolution and 33 times less noise than comparable SWaP magnetometers. It is unparalleled in resolution and sensitivity for its power, mass, size, and large dynamic range.  In addition to its extraordinary signal to noise, drift stability, and high resolution, the RM3100 has been verified to be extremely radiation tolerant, and as such, is already being used in a wide variety of Space applications.
