Research abstract

RAEKORÆs Evaporative Environmental Cooling Unit (EECU) is the most cost effective, efficient, and portable method to reduce air temperatures in shelters and tents for austere environments. The RAEKOR cooling is achieved through the evaporation of water instead of phase-changing refrigerants that require heavy, power hungry compressors and heat exchangers. ĀDue to the simplicity of using just small fans and water pumps, RAEKORÆs EECU requires only 10% of the power while reducing weight to 20% and cutting the overall size in half while keeping the same cooling output compared to the ArmyÆs current environmental control units (ECU). ĀBecause the power requirements are so low, RAEKORÆs EECU can be powered by a small, hand-carried 1-2kw generator which greatly reduces tactical fuel consumption and the need for prime movers hauling large generators.Ā This also greatly reduces the strain on logistical supply channels. Additionally, while a typical ECU can produce over 2.5 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) per week from tactical generator emissions, evaporative cooling has the strategic benefit of significantly decreasing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 85% of carbon dioxide and 100% of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), upholding the recently congressionally mandated Department of Defenseæs (DoD) Climate Action Plans for a sustainable future.
