Research abstract

Over the past several years Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have emerged as a significant threat to our forces and allies both from insurgents and our near-peer adversaries.Ā The rise of this new threat can be traced to rapid advances in UAS technologies as well as the low cost associated with these systems. UASs pose a challenging threat to our forces and allies due to volume, sensor limitations, effector limitations, speed and capabilities.ĀOur adversaries use these characteristics to employ tactics designed to overwhelm our operators (cognitive overload) and the sensors and effectors we use. In addition to these challenges there are legal, development, and cost constraints that make the development and deployment of C-UAS systems difficult. The overall objective of this work is to investigate the C-UAS problem and define in a whitepaper an open platform solution that can address those challenges.ĀThe key questions this white paper will address shall include: key challenges facing our organizations; design for a flexible open architecture; the benefits of multi-sensor fusion; what sensors and effectors work best together; and, what levels of threat detection and mitigation performance work best together. The program includes the following tasks: 1) Design open platform architecture; 2) Design Evaluation Scenarios; 3) Perform Sensor and Effector Modeling; 4) Peform simulation and analysis; and, 5) Create whitepaper.
