Research abstract

Parcell’s proposed solution aims to address the Defense need for improved mission capability readiness by automating a manual step in the logistics workflow. The current process of preparing and deploying Readiness Spares Packages (RSP) or Mobility Readiness Spares Packages (MSRP) is time-consuming and involves manual processes that are prone to error. Parcell’s proposed software solution integrates optimization algorithms for increased efficiency throughout the RSP provisioning, storage, maintenance, packing, and deployment process. The Parcell solution intends to to provide quantifiable improvement in the RSP preparation process using the following metrics: Speed. The 2nd Logistics Readiness Squadron seeks to reduce the current packing time from 14 days to 3 days from notification Accuracy.  Manual processes are more prone to error than an automated system would be, and pallets must meet strict weight and size requirements, or they may be rejected from loading onto an aircraft. This in turn, negatively impacts packing time. Space Utilization. A more compact package with a smaller footprint can potentially reduce the number or size of aircraft needed for transport, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in operating costs per trip. Accountability. Accountability of items contained in an RSP requires careful documentation by multiple individuals throughout the supply chain. Productivity. Automating labor-intensive, manual tasks will increase productivity by freeing airmen to work on other productive tasks.  The objective of this Phase I project is to validate the feasibility and potential impact of the Parcell solution for a USAF Logistics Squadron. Phase I activities will include: analyzing user needs, identifying key requirements of the solution, and outlining integration requirements.
