Research abstract

This is a re-submission of F3D17155 prior to deadline adding the 3rd fully signed MOU The space community is currently going through an explosive growth of orbital satellites that require “Space Domain Awareness” SDA for both defense threats of uncooperative assets as well as hazard space debris objects. Technologies for real-time, high-resolution imaging at extended range are limited by wavelength, operation, weather, or interference from sunlight requiring augmentation and high-power overhead enhancement by artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.  No solution exists to provide analysis of objects to determine the classification in real-time with onboard, real-time communications, sensor and correlation processing leading to augmented scan control.  As identified during the Sept 2023 AMOS conference, real-time, high-resolution imaging and discrimination is needed to identify both threat and hazard debris objects in space.  In addition to SDA, Active Debris Removal (ADR) is also an identified problem after a 2007 space vehicle collision.  In 2010 the US National Space Policy directed NASA and the DoD to “pursue research and development of technologies and techniques to “mitigate and remove on-orbit debris”.  In June 2018 the US Space Policy Directive-3, the National Space Traffic Management Policy directed the US to peruse Active Debris Removal (ADR) as a necessary long-term approach to ensure the safety of flight operations in orbital regimes.  NASA, ESA and other private companies identify that there are over 8800 tons of space debris ranging from 4800 discarded rocket stages and defunct satellites, while the remainder of the debris poses as 34,000 fragments larger than 10 cm in size, over 900,000 fragments between 1-10cm in size and over 128 million fragments under 1cm which all pose as threat to the US commercial and military space assets. Digibeam is presenting a scalable, electronics scan control system for space based, high-resolution, multi-spectral active imaging.  The phase II will support completion of the design, development and testing of a proof-of-concept hardware test system to verify virtual design toolbox for scaling and exploration of processing algorithms supporting imaging processing, correlation, communication and system level scan control.  It is intended that this proof-of-concept test demonstration will lead high utility of the virtual design toolbox leading to the natural development progression for design of a prototype flight hardware for a future phase III program.
