Research abstract

We are proposing to develop a novel multi-spectral, wide field-of-view digital binocular imaging system with visual augmentation capabilities for pilots and special operators. The proposed helmet-mounted compact night vision system is based on our hybrid night vision technology, latency-optimized neuromorphic imaging pipeline and digital image fusion and augmentation capabilities.  Enhanced day-night imaging will be provided using a combination of solid state CMOS image sensors and image intensifier tubes coupled with our proven low latency sensor-processor-display pipeline.  Reduced, size, weight, and power consumption will be achieved via a highly integrated electronics which will support both left and right imaging channels in a single-chip.  Each imaging channel will provide up to 80 degrees field of view with undiminished visual acuity and daylight to overcast starlight performance.  Spectral coverage will include the visual, near-infrared, and SWIR domains.  Each imaging channel will utilize a day and an intensified nigh vision sensor which be digitally combined using feature-based digital image fusion. The enhanced VIS/NIR/SWIR imagery will be digitally augmented with real-time battlefield data as well as imagery from connected platforms.  Sharing of on-board imagery will also be supported via a simultaneous video output interface.  The highly optimized core electronics will provide a see-through experience with sub-millisecond latency which is key for both low power operation and sustained use in battlefield environments.  The system will utilize proven visual augmentation technology and will allow seamless integration with tactical data sources. The proposed PEDBNVIS system will support standard helmet mounts, a conformal battery pack, and a simple user interface operable with gloved hands.
