Research abstract

Airborne Outfitters researchers developed a unique way to identify a person when that individual does not have traditional communications systems (radio) available or cannot use such devices.  The original solution received from the US Navy was embodied in a geodesic structure that was quickly assembled or inflated. Configurable panels were designed to reflect or resonate an RF signal emitted by a plane or satellite passing overhead. The signature signal was then reflected back to the aircraft/NTM (National Technical Means), and that unique signal is compared to stored signals on the jet/satellite. The pilot/operator can identify who the person is, their location and other pertinent data. When a capability as ubiquitous as GPS fails or is jammed, it is paramount to the warfighter to know that the employed failsafe will get them where they need to go safely and accurately. Since receiving the Technology Transfer from the US Navy, Airborne Outfitters has worked extensively with the Wright-Brothers Institute to replicate NSWC Crane’s original design into a smaller, more manageable solution. Through this partnership we were introduced and have since teamed with Vorbeck Materials Corporation—the industry leader in flexible graphene printed electronics. Vorbeck’s goal is to enable the next generation of communications and sensing devices for first responders, industrial workers and the military. Vorbeck manufactures its own proprietary materials (Vor-x), conductive inks (Vor-ink), electronic components and complete wearable-electronic systems. The BARFITE design has evolved from a beachball sized signaling device to a flexible, tailorable solution for the Warfighter. With a completed proof of concept and initial product testing completed by the United States Navy, Airborne Outfitters is ready to develop BARFITE into a modern NORDO (No Radio) signal that we believe may be able to be incorporated into several aircraft parts, floatation devices and/or inflatable/foldable personal NORDO signals. With this technology employed and utilizing the current radar technologies available, this product could fill the gap between electronic signaling equipment and visual recognition signals.
