Research abstract

The new frontier of Space has very limited manufacturing, repair and assembly capability. The estimated direct cost of a commercial space launch costs an estimated $62M or $1200 per pound in 2022 but will increase to $67M in 2023. The estimated direct cost of a NASA space launch is an estimated $2B due to the larger structures in 2023. The material to manufacture satellites and other space assets for space launch is also very expensive with the use of high strength materials such as titanium, Nanocarbon-infused metals, and carbon carbon composites. A significant impact of manufacturing in space would reduce the cost of space launch that could potentially save 20-40% per launch due the new capability. While the monetary expense is a critical measure, the true measure would be increased capabilities in space In the proposed STTR program, Treble One and EWI will adapt its commercially available manufacturing tools and tele- manufacturing technics to demonstrate the capabilities feasibility to perform manufacturing in space. Treble One and EWI’s approach will combine commercially available technologies into a deployable suite of tools capable of providing high fidelity assessment manufacturing in the space environment. The Tele-Manufacturing technology will have the ability to be used in space to repair, manufacture and assemble large space assets that are difficult to launch and provide a new manufacturing capability in space.
