Research abstract

Current wearables largely focus on sleep duration, overlooking crucial microarousals that are essential indicators of sleep health and daytime performance. There is a need for a deployable, non-intrusive, and continuous wearable device capable of monitoring microarousals Ś a metric more indicative of next-day performance and health outcomes compared to total sleep time alone.Ā STAT Health delivers the worldÆs smallest wearable, a patent-pending in-ear device that measures blood flow to the head via its non-invasive artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled biosensing platform. This hardware will be a significant improvement over current wearables by providing an easier and more accurate way for getting 24/7 human activity recognition and biometrics: Blood Flow to the Head, Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, Blood Pressure trends, body positioning, activity levels, and temperature.Ā Our collaboration with SRI, a renowned research institution specializing in advanced human sleep research, amplifies the device's potential. Together, we're exploring the promising potential of detecting arousal-related autonomic shifts, positioning our device as a viable alternative to traditional EEG-based arousal detection methods. This initiative aligns with and aims to surpass the DHA's expectations for real-time sleep microarousal detection wearables. Technically, STAT Health's device operates on an ultra-efficient software-hardware ecosystem, supplemented with energy harvesting, ensuring an impressive battery lifespan of over 12 hours. We've also enhanced the data infrastructure to support dual-mode operations, allowing for either onboard data storage or wireless transmission, all while adhering to military communication protocols. Combining STAT's cutting-edge technology with SRI's in-depth understanding of sleep dynamics and multimodal biosignals ensures a synergistic approach, priming this project for success.
