Research abstract
The Drone-Enabled Mine Neutralization Swarm (DEMINS) represents a paradigm shift in military engineering and obstacle breaching strategies, offering a scalable, rapid-response solution capable of operating effectively in contested and GPS-denied environments. This advanced system comprises a sophisticated fleet of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) specifically designed for remote mine neutralization and obstacle breaching. DEMINS integrates a dual-tiered approach, utilizing expendable micro-drones and larger, attritable UAVs, each outfitted with high-precision linear shaped charges for specific operational roles. The micro-drones in the DEMINS fleet are equipped with cutting-edge perception systems that include an HD global-shutter tracking camera. This camera supports optical flow, object classification, and visual-inertial odometry (VIO) algorithms, enabling precise localization and navigation towards targets even in GPS-denied environments. In contrast, the larger, more robust attritable UAVs boast a comprehensive perception system comprising 4x hemispherically arranged imaging sensors. These sensors facilitate spherical SLAM to meticulously map wire/cable obstacles prior to the strategic deployment of a spool of detonating cord, effectively breaching a diverse array of surface obstacles. A key innovation of DEMINS is its semi-autonomous operation, acting as a force-multiplier for combat engineer teams. This capability significantly reduces the risk to operators and equipment while maintaining a crucial standoff distance of over 1000 meters from breaching operations. The system provides unparalleled speed and flexibility in remote breaching methods, effectively neutralizing both surface and sub-surface mines, including modern top-attack mines like the Russian PTKM-1R, which can pose threats well beyond traditional breaching lanes. The DEMINS system promises enhanced safety by transferring the risk-laden task of mine neutralization and obstacle breaching to unmanned platforms. Its operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness represent significant improvements over conventional methods like the M58 MICLIC system. The scalability and adaptability of DEMINS allow for the technology to be tailored to diverse environments, addressing varying depths and widths of minefields and potentially extending to the precise neutralization of other strategic targets such as infrastructure. In summary, the DEMINS system is not only an effective solution for mine neutralization and obstacle clearing but also signals a move towards smarter, safer, and more economically viable operations for the Department of Defense, fundamentally transforming the approach to modern military engineering challenges.
