Research abstract

USW mission success relies on the skills of combat and sonar system operators in tactical operations. These skills are highly complex and perishable. The Navy needs a capability to provide operators individualized assistance to provide reminders, cues, and suggestions when an operatorÆs proficiency has naturally declined. In this topic, the Navy is seeking a capability that embeds prompts for system usage within the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) system to support proficiency and mission success. Proficiency with the system is not a single measurement, even experienced operators may have difficulty with rarely used capabilities during high operational tempo events. Mission success depends on operators making the best use of the technology. In-Depth Engineering will develop the Undersea Warfare Tactical Advantage Support Kit (TASK) to meet this Navy requirement. Tactical Advantage Support Kit (TASK) provides a powerful solution to assist operators using AI/ML tools.Ā Our approach captures operator interaction with the Q89 graphical user interface (GUI), and uses this interaction to train ML models; these models span threads of interaction with the user interface used to accomplish specific functional tasks.Ā We employ these models in the live tactical system to continuously evaluate the operatorÆs interaction, and provide a unique capability to assist in accomplishing these functional tasks. Our technical approach applies AI/ML to identify the task the operator is executing; determine if the operator needs help with that task; and provide individualized, context-aware operator assistance in real-time.
