Research abstract

For a wide range of missions, the preference to modify commercial vehicles (Non Standard Commercial Vehicles or NSCV) rather than use dedicated combat vehicles. The problem is that most new vehicles now come loaded with software and sensors that can compromise covert operations. Even low-end vehicles may have 100 electronic control units (ECUs) running 100 million lines of code. For example, the 2023 Toyota Hilux comes standard with camera-based AEB, high-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition, and the SR5 trim adds satellite navigation and a full surround-view camera system. These systems pose several problems for SOF: • They may be useful and working correctly, but reporting data back to an automaker, automotive supplier, rental car agency, dealership, or even a government agency. • Bad actors can jam, spoof, or deny GPS or hack ADAS to track or take control of a vehicle. • At the same time, sensors like cameras are becoming so common that their absence on a new vehicle would be suspicious. Compound Eye proposes to replace these systems with hardware and software under the control of SOF and turn these liabilities into assets for GPS-denied navigation and undetectable ISR. Our goal is to hyper-enable the NSCV.
