Research abstract

Ā Up to 10% of combat casualties in OIF and OEF were related to burns. 80% of these burns involve less than 20% of total body surface area making them non-life threatening if treated properly, but burns pose a high risk of infection due to loss of skin barrier as well as the associated systemic inflammatory response. More than 1 in 3 service members wounded in action experiences an infection; with over half of these being skin, soft tissue, or bone infections. ĀSignificant morbidity is associated with these infections. MatregenixÆs handheld device, SpinHeal, creates a natural-ingredient-based nanofiber wound healing barrier that fits the form of burns. These nanofiber dressings can remain in place for 21 days and stand to replace the need for skin grafting as the patientÆs own tissue grows into it. SpinHeal sprays a shelf-stable nanofibrous matrix that mimics the microarchitecture of human skin, enhancing the healing process by acting as a scaffold for tissue regrowth. During Phase I effort, Matregenix will engage with expeditionary medical units, such as USAF Pararescue units, who must be highly skilled in tactical combat casualty care
