Research abstract
Half of video streamed on the internet is for machine, not human, use. Considering that video is 80% of all internet traffic, that means that 40% of traffic is video streamed for machine use. Despite these facts, there are no publicly-available video codecs optimized for machine use cases. That leaves IoT, AR, and other use cases reliant on human-facing codecs like HEVC / H.265, all of which (i) preserve details irrelevant for machine functionality / analysis and (ii) fail to present the encoded bitstream in a way that unlocks machine functionality. OP Video (OPV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of OP Solutions (OPS), is a leader in developing the first generation of machine-optimized video compression technology. OPV uses IP and previous work completed by and licensed from OPS. OP Solutions is one out of 4 companies downselected by MPEG for the upcoming machine-facing video codec Video Coding for Machines (VCM), as well as a major contributor to a second MPEG machine-facing video codec Feature Coding for Video Coding for Machines (FCVCM). This Phase I effort will explore which users in the DAF will be interested in working, sponsoring, and/or evaluating our revolutionary video compression technology, developed 100% in the US and intended to be critical pieces of MPEG's next-generation VCM and FCVCM standards.
