Research abstract

Background: The DoD has used screening methods, such as polygraphs and flight aptitude tests, for decades to determine trustworthiness and suitability of personnel for highly specific roles. Polygraphs are costly, time consuming, and therefore used sporadically.?Ā The SPYDR device, similar to a true polygraph, helps determine physiological capability for true performance in sensitive missions, both as a polygraph style confidence assessment and as a performance indicator. Typical applications of polygraphs and CAs include screening, mission optimization and insider threat detection. They are not typically used for training, but we profess that they can be, and are capable of expanding into human performance and talent/suitability assessments. The most likely customers of traditional polygraphs are Intelligence training, Security Screening organizations and the Office of Special Investigations, but with added capability, can expand across the US Air Force, to include Air Education and Training Command.Ā Proposal: Spotlight Labs proposes to use a non-invasive, easy on and off device, coupled with internal and external data sources to produce an enhanced Polygraph for Performance with significantly reduced time investment and cost. The objective of this proposal is to assess the feasibility of developing and implementing an AI-powered, data-driven polygraph using Spotlight LabsÆ SPYDR Platform. The benefits would be that it can be used plentifully rather than traditional talent assessment techniques and polygraphs, will be quick, easy, and inexpensive to use, it does not require an operator, and it will eliminate the reliance and the variability of human trained operators through an AI/ML model. Further, it can also be used to teach trust and mission confidence.Ā Technical Merit: The SPYDR platform has successfully integrated multiple, redundant, and clinical physiological and environmental data streams with significant overlap to and in excess of state-of-the-art polygraph testing. Other capabilities exist to measure the genetic predisposition of an individual for selection into specific career fields and mission sets.Ā SPYDR performs two complementary tasks: (1) Detects and selects a training method for optimal initial or continuation training, and (2) Detects individual differences due to emotion or environmental impacts not assessed by genetic screening.Ā Commercialization: Defense and non-defense non-aviation use cases of the proposed innovation to include individual selection and suitability assessments, as well as insider threat within the DoD, Federal Agencies (CIA, Secret Service, DOJ), Government (IRS, US Customs), and Law Enforcement.Ā Team: Spotlight Labs, a veteran-owned, SBA-certified small business with over 15-years of developing, prototyping, and maturing innovative products, has partnered with Dr. Kevin Fleming and Norwich University, who has deep expertise in neurocognitive psychology and physiological monitoring systems.Ā
