Research abstract

This Phase I effort proposes to incorporate the in-flight physiological monitoring from a TRL-7 (soon TRL-9) SPYDR platform into a commercial Bose A30 headset with data management and an in-flight dashboard application to predict risk for helmeted and non-helmeted Airmen (AF End Users). AF Customers include any MAJCOM that wears headsets or earcups, including AMC, ACC, AETC, and US Space Force. The future of naval warfare with China requires new technologies and approaches, with an emphasis on Transport/Tanker Aircraft to support long-missions. AMC wants to achieve a 48-hour flight day and a SPYDR plug-in for a Bose A30 can support this in three ways: 1) Risk prediction and mitigation for Pulsed Operations, 2) Optimization of scheduling and On-Mission Performance, and 3) AI/ML driven Operational Risk Management to work up to a 48-hour work day.á Spotlight Labsĺ SPYDR platform has identified multiple in-flight physiological anomalies through 10,000 flight hours and ground training devices and demonstrated the ability to effectively merge physiological biomarkers with On-Mission event markers using prototypes. The technology has already established in-flight usability in USAF and USN aircraft and is in development (unfunded) with other commercial aviation entities. Additional SBIR/STTR grants have been completed, demonstrating the impact of Active Noise Reduction (ANR) on cognition and currently evaluating the impact of RF energy on physiology and cognition.áá The Spotlight Labsĺ team has over 15-years of developing, prototyping, and maturing innovative products, resulting in numerous patents, publications, and successful production contracts. Founded by USAF fighter pilots, the company has 12 patents issued focusing on physiology, risk management, and mission accomplishment.áá The commercialization strategy for the proposed effort involves transitioning from DoD tactical aviation to DoD general aviation (Transport, Tankers, Special Operations) and commercial industries (Business Aviation, General Aviation, Non-Aviation use cases). The integration of the SPYDR platform in a commercial headset with data management app has a direct use case to all aviation to include automated, non-automated, semi-automated, fixed-wing, and vertical lift aircraft, non-flying aviation functions, maintenance and support. It further supports Aircrew makeup and optimization for both numbers and duty duration.á á
