Research abstract

The objective of our STTR program is to mature relevant technologies, test, and develop the Ruggedized in-ear Pulse Oximeter Device (ePoD-R) into a product that detects the onset of episodes of physiological impairment in aircrew.Ā Recent incidences of physiological events that grounded T-6 underscore the need for the sensor. The ePoD-R uses commercially available COTS components and provides consistent and accurate time-stamped results from multiple sensors. The in-ear sensor can be integrated into ear audio monitors developed by Westone Labs and the current AF Attenuating Custom Communications Earpiece System (ACCES) earplug that is used by the aircrew in tactical aircraft. We will work closely with USAF personnel to test, evaluate, and refine the system via continuous testing, leading to a flightworthy system that can be flight-tested at the end of Phase II. The ePoD-R can be used to warn aircrew about the possible onset of incapacitating symptoms and performance deteriorating physiological events (PE) like Hypoxia, Gravity Induced Loss of Consciousness (GLOC), cognitive-emotional distress, and thermal stress.
