Research abstract

For many DAF applicationsĀlithium-ionĀbatteries are unfitĀbecause of their hazards (flammability, toxicity), foreign supply chain, cost, and/or operational limitations. Unfortunately, there are currently no alternative batteries that can offer the same level of performance to lithium-ion. Zinc batteries represent an attractive class of safe, US-made, dependable and long lasting alternatives, but currently these do not perform at the level of lithium-ion in terms of capacity or efficiency. To solve this issue and enable zinc batteries to perform at levels nearer toĀlithium-ion,ĀOctet Scientific, Inc. has developed a family of new electrolyte chemicals that greatly enhance the performance of zinc batteries so that these technologies may be able to support the DAF and DOD in many safety-critical and supply-criticalĀenergy storage uses. Octet's OctoLyteĀelectrolyte additive chemicals stop the unwanted side reactions that hinder zinc batteries from achieving higher performanceĀsuch as dendrite formation, gas generation, corrosion, and shape change. By halting these mechanisms OctoLyte can enhance battery capacity by up to 75%, extend run time by up to 50%, and increase cycle life by up to 100%. Octet's OctoLyte zinc battery electrolytes can optimize zinc batteries, many of which the DAF/DOD already use, into safe, secure, sustainable, and high-performance alternatives for mission critical energy storage in a variety of applications. OctoLyte redefines what zinc batteries can do, and this SBIR Phase I seeks to fine additionalĀDAF users who need this better, safer option in energy storage.
