Research abstract

BioScent represents an innovative solution for leveraging advanced AI and olfactory sensing technology to diagnose a spectrum of medical conditions through urine analysis. The system encapsulates two adaptive form factors; one incorporates a BioScent lid that attaches to a graduated bottle similar to a Nalgene, and the other embeds the BioScent sensor in line with a Foley catheter bag. These form factors are engineered for field adaptability and seamless integration into diverse medical scenarios. The cornerstone of BioScentĺs innovation is its ability to transmit real-time diagnostic data to BATDOK, a patient charting application, thereby enhancing medical decision-making and response efficiency. The technology is poised to set a benchmark in rapid diagnostics, particularly in austere and challenging environments, fulfilling a crucial Defense need. Building on the foundation of established research, BioScent harnesses machine learning algorithms validated for human olfactory research and electronic nose technology proven for clinical diagnostics. The proposal envisions expanding detectable conditions and optimizing sensor capabilities, emphasizing its applicability both for Defense stakeholders and non-defense customers. The technical merit of BioScent is substantiated by extensive research indicating the reliability of electronic noses in detecting diseases through urine volatilome profiling and the advancement of machine learning in olfactory data applications. BioScent combines the expertise of a proficient team, including specialists in Clinical Research, Data Science, Neuroscience, Military Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering, to address the technical challenges and ensure the projectĺs success. The team's qualifications and the adaptability of the technology underline the commercialization potential of BioScent in diversified medical landscapes. This initiative aligns with the Air Forceĺs strategic capabilities and modernization priorities, including Advanced Computing and Software, Biotechnology, Human-Machine Interfaces, Integrated Sensing Microelectronics, and Trusted AI and Autonomy. The proposal is designed to address and impact the Defense need, demonstrating relevance, urgency, and broad applicability of the solution in advancing medical diagnostics and care delivery.
