Research abstract

Contingency Response Wings and agile airfields require a rapidly deployable, logistically simple power source to allow them to operate in contested logistics environments. Diesel generators are difficult to transport and require constant fuel re-supply, which puts air bases at the mercy of constant resupply. Solar only operates during the day and cannot function in extreme cold or snow. China and Russia will attack DAF/DoD supply lines and make reliance on fuel resupply tactically impractical. To address these challenges, CBC proposes its Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) turbines as a renewable wind energy alternative. TheĀ Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) wind turbine is an omni-directional, low-profile wind turbine solution. It introduces wind power as a viable renewable energy alternative through its compact, non-disruptive form factor. CBC proposes a feasibility study to modify and adapt the HIPS to power CRE and CRT equipment at agile Contingent Locations in order to (a) provide a lightweight, simple to transport and deploy energy source; and, (b) reduce fuel consumption requirements during ACE and enable air base energy self-sufficiency, particularly, in future conflicts where near-peer adversaries like China or Russia will contest logistical resupply lines and warrant rapid response.Ā Preliminary discussions with members of the 621st CRW have indicated a defense need for such a solution.
