Research abstract
Introduction: Ensuring the safety and security of educational institutions is a paramount concern in today's world. The increasing of school crises, ranging from medical emergencies to active shooter incidents, necessitatesáthe development of robust and agile crisis management solutions. The Active Defender application, proposed in this AFáSBIR application, aims to address this critical need by providing advanced situational awareness and communication capabilities tailored specifically for school crisis management. Problem Statement: Traditional crisis management systems in educational institutions often lack real-time situational awareness and effective communication tools, leading to delayed responses and suboptimal outcomes during emergencies. There is a pressing need for a comprehensive solution that enables school staff and first responders to react swiftly and decisively to crisis situations, reducing the potential for harm and improving overall safety. Solution Overview: Active Defender is a cutting-edge mobile application designed to empower schools with advanced situational awareness and communication capabilities. Leveraging state-of-the-art technologies, this app will revolutionize how educational institutions respond to crises. Key features and components of the Active Defender application include: 1.á Real-time Situational Awareness:á Integration with various sensors and data sources to provide real-time information on the crisis scenario, such as location, type of incident, and severity. Geospatial mapping for visualizing the crisis area, evacuation routes, and safe zones. 2.á Communication Hub: Secure and encrypted communication channels for school staff, law enforcement, and first responders to collaborate efficiently. Push notifications and alerts to quickly disseminate critical information to relevant parties. 3.á Emergency Services Integration: Seamless integration with local emergency services, enabling faster response times and better coordination during crises 4.á Accountability: Personnel and student tracking and accountability features to ensure the safety of all individuals on the campus. Conclusion: Active Defender is a solution that canámeet the crisis management needs of USAF schools related to challenges regarding situational awareness and communication for teachers and staff during emergencies. Active Defender is a proven crisis management solution currently used by 156 school systemsáacross 21 states as well as multiple 911 centers and police stations.áOur engineers will work to define the necessary adaptations of our non-defense commercial solution to meet the needs of our final USAF End-User. We will work with our AF End-User (Operator)áand the associated AF Customer (Acquisitions expert)áto clearly define a set of milestones and a trial to demonstrate how our adapted solution can meet the needs of the specific AFáend-user.
