Research abstract

Due to the nature of their service, military veterans face particular risk of experiencing traumatic events and subsequently developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Around 7% of veterans and 6% of all adults will have PTSD at some point in their lives and approximately 12 million adults suffer from it in any given year. According to the DoD Annual Report on Suicide in the Military, 519 service members died by suicide with young, enlisted service members being at greatest risk. Many individuals who suffer from mental health disorders do not get the treatment and care that they need, which may lead to suicide. A large-scale survey found that 24% of military personnel diagnosed with PTSD had experienced suicidal thinking within the past year. With respect to the financial costs associated with this disorder, research has found that through work impairment, hospitalization, and health visits, PTSD was responsible for higher costs than any of the other anxiety disorders. Current PTSD and mental health assessment and monitoring options include Pen and Paper tests, and computerized test. These options are time-consuming, tedious, subject to tester bias and fatigue, and too costly. Often, they are not administered at all unless specifically requested by a patient. A more recent trend has been digitalization of these paper and pencil tests to make them more accessible. However, the questionnaires are still standard, self-reported, and yield inconsistent results. Given the limitations of current PTSD assessment methods, there is an urgent need for tools that can provide precise, non-subjective diagnoses and monitoring of PTSD and related mental health disorders. In response, our company has developed MINDBANK AI, a digital twin platform that creates a dashboard of one's mind and provides a holistic approach to mental health by asking open-ended questions about life, enabling early intervention, and engaging patients in their own care through an easy-to-use interface. During this Phase I project, we will explore the USAF needs and requirements for a personalized tool that can provide precise, non-subjective diagnoses and monitoring of PTSD and related mental health disorders. We will identify initial USAF customers and engage with end users, both at the operational and implementational levels, to determine their specific needs and the adaptations required. We will start by reaching out to the Air Force Medical Service, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency, and Air Force Reserve Command as a first points of contact. MINDBANK AI will be sold as a software-as-a-service to psychologists, mental health practitioners, organizations and individuals who will use it to track changes in mental health and gather insights into personalities, emotionality, and strengths.
