Research abstract

Infectious diseases pose a greater threat to our well-being than they have before. Antimicrobial resistance for several reasons, being the key driver of this this issue the overuse of antibiotics to treat viral infections misdiagnosed as bacterial infections. The inadequacy of microbiological diagnostic capabilities limit therapeutic strategies based on local pathogen and resistance profile. When not identified on time, infections can led to life-threatening complications as sepsis, causing heavy health loss and a high-related costs. Developing an accurate and rapid point-of-care (POC) testing solution that helps determine the source of infection is either bacterial or viral and stratifies sepsis patients by risk in austere or contested environments is therefore vital for effective tracking, containment, and treatment of infectious diseases in austere or contested environments. RizLab Health, Inc. has developed the first wireless, portable device for hematologic analysis that can count white blood cells for multiple indications at the point-of-care without the need of specialized equipment and highly trained lab staff. Our solution will alleviate the burden of pathological biothreats and improvement of the risk-based stratification for patients undergoing infection/sepsis. The CytoTracker can be utilized in settings where WBC analysis is not possible or easily accessible/affordable using current instruments and improve clinical outcomes in harsh environments. This Phase I will allow for the discrimination of infectious diseases bacterial or viral origin, and sepsis stratification on USAF end-users and customers, as well as specific standards and requirements for rapid, on-site detection of these. During Phase I, we will meet with USAF officials responsible for product integration within the medical diagnostic field and survey the end users.
