Research abstract

Dual use electric aviation has a battery problem. Commercial off the shelf Li-ion power cells do not have the energy to accomplish full mission objective or the range to be commercially successful. Commercial high energy Li-ion cells do not have the power density and cannot charge in 15 minutes hundreds of times. Fast charging is necessary for operational flexibility and for commercial systems to turn a profit. No eVTOL can be economically sustainable if they need 3 hours to charge before every commercial flight. Li-metal cannot charge fast without creating dendrites, so silicon is the only anode solution that can achieve mission objectives. However silicon anodes have lifetime limitations, scale up issues, and severe safety implications. GDI has developed a novel 100% silicon anode that can deliver high energy >300Wh/kg, while still charging hundreds of times in 15 minutes, with the power density to take off and land hundreds of times. It was designed to have much higher safety through a low surface area anode, and is being fabricated on industrial roll-to-roll in order to scale to the manufacturing volumes needed. Best of all the full supply chain and manufacturing is domestic and allied nations to remove the graphite used in commercial cells. Graphite is dominated by adverse supply (95% of the manufacturing base is in adverse nations)
