Research abstract

Near peer adversaries have been elevating their aggressive posture on the world stage over the last few years, in part by enlisting every available asset for military use.Ā ĀThe U.S. needs to proportionately expand awareness of the expanding threat, with many "sentinels" at all levels to persistently track the adversarial forces, without overtaxing available budgets and human resources.Ā NDS and the DAF Key Capabilities have both identified a defense need for Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy, but the latest report from the National Academies shows that challenges still exist in target identification and tracking, situational awareness, autonomy, and the ability to rapidly train and deploy autonomous systems.ĀĀ ASRIÆs EPAS is an Autonomous Edge Threat Detection System, provided as a low-cost modular upgrade package to enable rapid and widespread deployment of ISR capabilities to a wide variety of air platforms.Ā EPASÆ goal is to quickly convert military, commercial, and COTS air platforms into autonomous sensing systems capable of target detection, tracking and recognition, efficiently sharing information across networks, and manage sensor cross-cueing and steering, all without the need for human interaction.Ā EPAS is an AI-enabled ISR force multiplier.Ā The goal of EPAS is to leverage more of the available air assets, including commercial aircraft and COTS drones, to rapidly expand the ISR network coverage and help maintain up-to-date information on the growing number of threats.Ā To achieve this goal, EPAS will incorporate ASRI's SIMITAR autonomous ISR processors and COTS sensors, in a package which can be easily installed in military, commercial and COTS air platforms.Ā For Phase I, we intend to explore Air Force TEOs, PEOs and MAJCOMS to identify and engage relevant programs.Ā The product scalability lends itself to a variety of applications and will be presented with different sensor configurations as appropriate for the relevant program needs for both ISR and tactical needs.Ā This discovery process and feedback will determine the best integration components for Phase II.
