Research abstract

Precision Combustion Inc. will integrate proven scalable and modular solid-sorbent based flue-gas carbon capture and storage solutions for onboard carbon capture and storage (CCS). Out approach allows for improved capture rates, uniform fluid flow, and significantly enhanced thermal behavior as compared to other solid sorbents, liquid sorbents, or packing structures. Our storage solution avoids the need for extensive compression or liquification with corresponding additional energy. Key advantages of our thermally integrated approach include carbon capture sorbent proven to operate durably on coal or natural-gas combustion exhaust with 100% humidity and carbon capture contactor design operated to achieve up to 85% carbon capture from flue gas, meeting requirements of greater than 75% capture efficiency. Phase I base and option periods will focus on optimizing our CCS sorbent technology, developed under multiple DOE and NASA SBIR programs, for use in marine environments. We will study how the presence of turbine exhaust contaminants including NOx, SOx, hydrocarbons, and significantly brine, will impact the performance of both capture and storage. We will examine integration issues with selected ship space, weight, and power availability. This effort will focus CCS from F-76 fueled LM-2500 gas turbine exhaust as part of the NavyÆs overall effort to reduce the NavyÆs carbon footprint; success will bring CCS to a variety of military and commercial vessels. The outcome will be a low-energy highly efficient solution for CCS.
