Research abstract

The proposed third Intelligent Scenario Management Framework (ISMF) SBIR Phase II initiative seeks to design, build, and transition innovative technology that addresses the ‘the technical and pragmatic challenges of establishing an “expert diagnostician tool that will automatically generate simulation training scenarios and reconfigure scenario events to meet training objectives.”’ [N02-184].  The resulting ISMF solution will provide life cycle support for adaptive training that includes training content creation, training execution, performance measurement, After Action Review (AAR), and adaptive training content generation.   Central to the proper functioning of an adaptive training system is the structure and veracity of the ‘content’ itself.  The core problem with current simulation-based training is the lack of cohesive information maintained about the content to allow the training system to function and provide salient feedback to the trainee.  This problem is endemic to simulation-based training community because the emphasis has in the past, as well as currently, been placed on training exercise development and not on instrumenting the simulation-based training content definition for a directed, context-specific performance measurement.  The Maestro™ technology solution allows the training content to relate training ‘stimuli’ to (desired) ‘responses’, thereby providing for directed performance measurement, and ultimately enabling a robust and structured mechanism to instrument training content with critical knowledge from a variety of training roles including content designers, instructional experts, SMEs, research scientists, ISR operators, etc.  Knowledge previously lost will now be made part of the content – allowing the system to exploit this knowledge for advanced queries, analysis, content generation, and learning content maintenance.  Building off the success of the ISMF second Phase II project, the proposed effort will enhance, harden, and transition these methods and technologies to the Maritime ISR (MISR) community.
