Research abstract

nou Systems Inc. (nSI) has begun developing a low-cost, single-use, compact, propellant powered generator to augment the current capabilities of Lockheed Martin Corporation Rotary and Mission Systems MK39 EMATT. Our approach leverages recent advancements in safe, storable, high-impulse green propellants. Our generator operates on a controlled open-loop cycle, efficiently transforming the stored chemical energy in low-toxicity “green” propellants into electricity. Our performance models indicate that our resulting generator can meet all of Navy’s challenging size, weight, and power requirements. It will have extremely high power density and efficiency with nearly inaudible acoustic emissions. Further, to achieve a low-cost, expendable system, our approach merges design simplicity, the integration of commercial off-the-shelf components (when applicable), and advanced manufacturing techniques.     nSI has assembled an exceptional alliance with the complementary skillset needed to warrant a successful technology transition?controlled gas generation and delivery, combustion, power generation and conversion from the high enthalpy gases, and industrial design to support the transitioning of the technology. During Phase I, will perform design analyses, conduct trade studies, and develop preliminary designs for all system components. In addition, we plan to develop and test a breadboard system. In Phase II, we plan to fabricate, test, qualify, and deliver up to 30 prototypes for testing at the US Naval Surface Warfare Center.
