Research abstract

Problem: Direct Air Capture of CO2 (DAC) is still underrealized due to its high energy demand. Integration of DAC with low-carbon and underutilized waste heat sources is necessary for achieving a low-cost and carbon negative process. Objective: Precision Combustion Inc. is developing a DAC system that efficiently utilizes waste heat from sources such as geothermal to operate the unit at low cost. Our scalability and design focus towards a tight thermal integration of CO2 collector unit with waste heat eases integration for varied situations and with a variety of application for maximum value uses for the concentrated CO2. Plan Our Phase 1 work will consist of: (1) minimizing the required thermal regeneration temperature to reduce heat duty of the DAC process; (2) optimize the use of waste heat thermal energy using a novel approach employing tight thermal integration of sorbent, sorbent structural supports and heat exchanger design; and (3) fit of the integrated design with specific waste heat sources with follow-on Phase 2 field trials of the pilot-scale unit at the host site. Commercial Applications and other benefits: Reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide will be a primary human challenge for the foreseeable future. Direct Air Capture of carbon dioxide offers an approach to accomplishing this, with its relative benefit depending upon the extent to which it can be made technically feasible and economically acceptable
