Research abstract

Air Force is seeking a novel high energy rechargeable lithium battery technology to provide high quality enduring power for the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) Battlefield Airmen (BA) wearable electronics and small unmanned aerial system (SUAS) applications. Lynntech proposes to develop a High Energy, Safe Rechargeable Li-Metal Battery by using a stabilized Li metal anode, a protective electrolyte with stabilizing additives, and a high capacity cathode. During this project’s Phase I study, Lynntech successfully developed, fabricated, and tested high energy, rechargeable Li-metal battery cells that bring this technology closer to the commercial level. Their wide rate capability, extended cycling life, operation in a wide temperature and humidity range was successfully demonstrated, as well as its scalability to large pouch cell configuration. During Phase II, we will further improve materials and design of the cell components that will allow us to develop prototype cells meeting Air Force requirements. We will also conduct a risk assessment and develop a transition plan that could enable commercialization of this technology. At the end of the Phase II, prototype high energy rechargeable Li battery cells will be delivered to the U.S. Air Force.
