Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force, and specifically aircraft maintenance groups, have a national Defense-related need to accelerate problem resolution and improve training. They seek a means of leveraging best-in-class wearable display technology to provide heads-up, hands-free access to information and collaboration as a means of expediting maintenance and improving safety during maintenance actions. The faster and more conveniently a maintainer can access the right information, whether through documentation or collaboration, the faster and more accurately she can complete the action. Ostendo proposes to leverage its proprietary Quantum Photonic Imager (QPI), a key enabling technology, to create normal-looking and compliant safety glasses that are also wearable displays which connect wirelessly to existing laptops and tablets to stream existing Tech Order data to the glasses. In the future, this solution will enable real-time collaboration with local and remote experts. It also has the potential to become the long-term data- and software-agnostic solution for the broader opportunity of AR glasses across the DAF. The QPI is a full-color, microLED-based microdisplay that offers unprecedented levels of efficiency, enabling wearable displays that are significantly smaller, lighter, brighter, more compatible, and cheaper than competitive products from Microsoft, Magic Leap, and others. The QPI is an advanced hybrid semiconductor manufactured in the US, using novel split-manufacturing techniques, and backed by hundreds of patents.
