Research abstract

A program to develop a SWIR-MWIR/LWIR spectral imager and processor with algorithms for detection, identification and tracking of small UAVs is proposed.Ā The proposed Spectral imaging UAV Detection Sensor (SUADS) builds upon Surface OpticsÆ real-time hyperspectral imaging activities, including our 3D full-motion video spectral imaging (FMV-SI) technology and our MIDIS hyperspectral image processor.Ā Simultaneously sampling 32 or more spectral bands from 1 to 12 um over a full two-dimensional field, the system is ideal for identifying and tracking UAVs in complex cluttered environments, based on their component plastic and composite spectral signatures.Ā Through detailed design, manufacture, and testing, the proposed program will implement an optimized design for a compact infrared full-motion video spectral imager appropriate for both day and night UAV detection.Ā The system will include a compact, rugged, real-time spectral imager plus the real-time hyperspectral (HS) data processor, with existing SOC detection algorithms and additional SBIR-developed algorithms.Ā The proposed effort represents an extension of Surface OpticsÆ 30 yearsÆ experience in hyperspectral imager design and miniaturization of SOCÆs patented real-time spectral image processor for real-time hyperspectral discrimination.Ā By building on Surface Optics CorporationÆs experience in spectral imaging system development, sensor development, and algorithm development, the proposed program will produce a new full-motion video spectral imaging small UAV detector of unsurpassed capability.
