Research abstract

APEX Turbine, in collaboration with Intelligent Artifacts, will apply artificial intelligence to reduce data analysis time and improve effectiveness of engine testing.  AI software will be applied to engine dynamic test data to intelligently detect critical dynamic responses among the billions of random noise data points.  This helps identify relationships between complex phenomena, providing more accurate engineering knowledge which helps avoid fleet failures or flight envelope restrictions.  Applying AI will help accelerate post-test analysis dramatically and improve accuracy.    This APEX Turbine Testing Technologies proposal is focused on adapting its proven, commercially-available automated test data analysis solution for commercial turbine engine development testing to the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) turbine engine test complex.  APEX has coordinated with Mr. Steve Arnold, Technical Advisor, Aeropropulsion Combined Test Force (CTF) at AEDC to develop a concept for software application, adaptation, and implementation.  APEX will further adapt its DX Software tool by introducing artificial intelligence to automatically detect vibration responses from signals used for HCF characterization.  A typical simulated altitude aeromechanical test program can generate more than two million vibration responses, each of which must be assessed against success criteria.  This can take dozens of engineers months to fully analyze.  The presence of noise from various sources can significantly complicate and obscure the HCF characterization and lead to HCF escapes that significantly affect program schedule and cost.  It can also double the amount of time needed to perform the assessment
