Research abstract

IAI is proposing a time/frequency synchronized multi-channel distributed radar system and the necessary algorithms to unobtrusively and autonomously detect and identify weapons and explosives concealed in baggage and/or on persons. The radar system and algorithm integration rely upon the unique features of radar returns from these specific threat targets. Each phenomenology-based algorithm will be implemented in parallel, analyzing data obtained from each individual radar that is preprocessed locally and then securely transmitted to a central processing location to complete the detection and reporting process. Each algorithm focuses on a different feature of the potential threat target’s return signal. The three target aspects considered in IAI’s system are (1) object resonances, (2) specific shapes and (3) contrast in dielectric constant. The fusion of these separate results will both meet the surveillance requirements (Detection Probability, False Alarm Rate, Location Accuracy, and Identification) and address different target types (guns, knives and explosives). This system can be used for improved security at Air Force Base perimeters and installation access control points. By using COTS hardware to implement a flexible multi-channel radar as well as one of IAI’s proven technologies, Array Self Synchronization (AS2), for time/frequency synchronization and link communication, the hardware implementation risk will be low.
