Research abstract

OptiPro Systems is pleased to present the Navy with this Phase II proposal which promotes continuation of our Phase I work on the topic of Long-Wave Infrared (IR) Window/Dome Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) Reduction. This proposal consists of a two-year base period followed by a one-year option period wherein OptiPro will conduct research related to reducing manufacturing costs of germanium domes. The proposed work will be completed at OptiPro Systems, LLC, either by or under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator Kyle C. Wood who also served as the Phase I Principal Investigator. When composing the initial Phase I proposal, OptiPro was under the assumption that the germanium domes in question were true hemispheres. After having been awarded the Phase I program, OptiPro began communications with its Technical Point of Contact (TPOC) Dr. Ann M. Reagan. Dr. Reagan was able to connect us with an end-user of the germanium domes which allowed us access to an actual dome print. In reviewing the dome print it was realized that these domes were not true hemispheres, but hemispheres with a tail feature. The addition of this tail feature adds an increased degree of complexity to the manufacturing process, requiring some changes to our production process methodologies. Although the part geometry requirements have changed, OptiPro has a solution that is still compatible with the cost reduction desired by NAVAIR that we feel is only possible with our technology, knowledge and expertise. The framework of this proposal is driven by the exciting information gathered and knowledge gained from our Phase I program as well as the intended Phase I Option period. With focus on dome cost reduction, this Phase II effort will be centered around optimizing the scoop-grinding process, improved material recovery systems, finish grinding and finish polishing of 9” germanium domes within a $50,000 budget. Additionally, OptiPro will explore with the prime contractors the possibility of modifying the dome geometry such that the tail feature is not an attached artifact or is modified such that changes to our production process methodologies are not necessary. Any design changes will be subject to the end-user’s technical input and approval as well as communicated via the Technical Point of Contact, Dr. Ann M. Reagan.
