Research abstract

The objective of this Phase II effort is to mature and deploy the DELVE (Document Extraction, Layout, Verification, and Encapsulation) system: a digital engineering platform that transforms unstructured legacy test documentation into structured, searchable, and analyzable engineering knowledge. Building on successful Phase I results, the proposed effort will extend DELVE’s capabilities to include multi-modal element extraction, metadata linkage, statistical modeling, and analyst-facing visualization tools. The system will ingest multi-modal inputs such as: scanned technical reports, embedded figures, tables, handwritten annotations, and automated video frame labels, then process and unify these elements into a persistent, queryable backend accessible via a secure graphical interface and RESTful API.DELVE’s Phase II development will culminate in a demonstration of engineering-level encapsulation, where new ballistic test data is integrated with legacy data to support survivability forecasting, test gap analysis, and material performance evaluation. Analysts will be able to navigate, compare, model, and validate historical and current test data with minimal manual preprocessing. This capability directly supports digital transformation goals for test planning and legacy knowledge recovery.
