Research abstract

Modern maritime surveillance radar and RF sensing is facing a growing challenge when operating in contested environments. A plurality of advanced threats and tactics is rendering traditional radar/RF architectures obsolete. Future operations will require far greater flexibility and adaptability to regain the strategic advantage. In this project, a new multifunction, multimodal, maritime surveillance radar (M3R) architecture is being developed that will provide unprecedented flexibility to meet emerging challenges. M3R consists of an integrated set of both active and passive radar operations, advanced adaptive waveforms and processing, next-gen high-resolution radar imaging, next-gen electronic protection (EP), and other advanced modes and functions. An advanced M3R radar scheduler is also being developed to orchestrate and optimize the allocation of resources (timeline, energy, processing, etc.). M3R is designed to accommodate future upgrades including cognitive maritime radar (CMR) functions.
