Research abstract

In the phase I base effort, PSI has verified the proposed approaches towards a length matched, balanced detection microwave photonic link through successful development of the critical components, experimental verification of the fundamental length matching for an MCF and critical process innovations for subsystem integration and assembly. In the phase I base period and phase II, we will continue improving the dual-output modulator and balanced PD design and fabrication for improved bandwidth, efficiency and power balance. We will acquire a long MCF sample and study their length matching properties in controlled environment for potential platform deployment. We will integrate both the BPD and the dual-output MZM focusing on maintaining and improving the system balance and noise rejection capability. An MCF-based balanced detection IMDD link prototype using fully packaged components will be demonstrated in the phase II effort to meet the required link specs. We will also develop an LNOI based dual-output MZM with <1.5V Vp for the link development and study and demonstrate an MCF-based balanced detection link using the LNOI dual-output MZM with greatly improved system NF. In addition, environmental study and qualification for the developed link and link components will be conducted throughout the phase II period.
