Research abstract

Current digital radiography (DR) panels used by emergency responders are repurposed medical imaging devices optimized for 50 keV, resulting in very poor efficiency (0.3-1%) at the 7 MeV energies needed for field radiography. This severe limitation forces operators to use higher intensity sources, longer exposure times, and accept compromised image quality. While some commercial non-destructive testing panels have attempted to address this through intensifier screens and modified scintillators, they haven't met the cost and performance requirements for widespread deployment. We will develop high-efficiency DR panels using our breakthrough cesium lead bromide (CPB) perovskite semiconductor technology. Our innovative approach uses direct X-ray conversion with thick CPB sensors fabricated through low-cost solution processing. The panels will be manufactured using cost-effective methods that make them affordable for widespread use by emergency response teams. We have already proven this technology in medical settings, and for this project we will adapt it for the more demanding needs of field operations. This technology will significantly improve emergency response capabilities by enabling faster, clearer imaging with less radiation exposure. The panels will work with existing equipment and emergency response software, allowing easy adoption. Beyond emergency response, applications include industrial safety inspections, aerospace manufacturing, and security screening.
